For Immediate Release: September 27, 2003 Michelle Miller Honored at Lone Star Park Circle of Life Event Michelle Miller, creator and founding President of The Cancer Monument, Inc. was honored today at the Lone Star Circle of Life Bike Tour. "There are many ways to a cure", states Michelle. "We all have to do our part to win the war against cancer. Becoming a marrow donor takes less than 10 minutes and only requires a quick finger stick blood draw and a pen to write with. You probably won’t even need a band-aid! Don’t let your fears prevent you from saving someone’s life." www.marrow.org Michelle received an autologous bone marrow transplant in January 2002 to battle her Hodgkin’s’ Lymphoma, but is now in need of a matched donor for a repeat transplant. www.thecancermonument.org The Circle of Life Tour is being held September 22nd-28th to raise awareness of the need for life-saving donations of blood, marrow, organs and tissues. Michelle was one of eleven who were honored today as the Bike tour stopped in Grand Prairie, Texas. The tour traveled throughout many Texas townships. It began in Galveston and will end tomorrow in Tyler. Local events in each town were planned to give the community a chance to participate in blood donation, register for the National Marrow Donor Program and sign an organ and tissue donation card. Recipients, donors and donor families were also on hand to share their experiences and answer questions. On each day of the tour, the participants rode in honor of a Texan in need of a transplant. www.sw.org Non-professional riders were chosen for the tour and Lisa Keville of Temple, Texas rode in honor of Michelle. The two women had a chance to meet for a few hours and share why the need for bone marrow donors is an important cause. Lisa participated in the Bike Tour to raise awareness about becoming a bone marrow donor. "It’s a life changing event for patient and donor," states Lisa. "The ultimate reward is that you can save a life." |
