Honoring those who have fought the battleHome

Frequently Asked Questions

The Cancer Monument was a great idea. Why now is it not being built?

Efforts to build The Cancer Monument began in 2000, extended nationally and internationally, involved thousands of volunteer manpower hours, events and extensive media efforts, including four years of fundraising initiatives. By 2008 it became evident that public support was not forthcoming to obtain our goal of 60,000 Honoree inscriptions by 2009. Funds obtained from 60,000 inscriptions would have built The Cancer Monument at Allen Station Park, Allen Texas. The difficult decision to cease fundraising efforts was made in January 2008.

I submitted an Honoree Inscription form to help build The Cancer Monument. This is the first time I am hearing about plans to not build The Cancer Monument. Why wasn’t I notified?

Notification letters were mailed on March 3, 2008 to the following people using contact information provided to us on our inscription form: A) Sponsors of Honorees; B) Living Honorees; C) Closest Living Relative of an Honoree; and D) Corporate Sponsors and Families wishing to have an inscription.

If you did not receive a letter from The Cancer Monument Incorporated perhaps we do not have your most recent mailing address on file. In some cases, supporters were contacted by email or telephone when such information was provided and still valid.

Why couldn’t The Cancer Monument be built a little at a time and names inscribed as they are received?

In 2004, The Cancer Monument Board of Directors and the City of Allen agreed to a 5 year fundraising campaign in which public interest would also be determined. The Cancer Monument Incorporated, a Texas nonprofit charitable 501c3, was responsible for all fundraising activities. Funds for the monument’s construction was to be obtained entirely through charitable public support, which would have mostly, consisted of inscription donations at $135 each for a 35-character line inscribed in granite. The goals and long lasting purpose of The Cancer Monument to honor cancer heroes and offer public education was widely communicated through numerous mediums. Concurrently, the City of Allen agreed to hold a 2-acre park site for the monument’s construction for 5 years while fundraising efforts took place. If public support were clear and evident at the conclusion of the 5-year fundraising campaign in 2009 both the city and the foundation Board would have likely continued efforts. An indefinite project was not the goal of either party. By 2008 about 386 inscriptions were submitted. Thus, it was evident that our goal of 60,000 inscriptions would not be achieved by 2009 and monies needed to build The Cancer Monument would not be obtained.
